NFL Draft Profile: West Virginia Running Back Steve Slaton
Steve Slaton was a hero at West Virginia and part of a dynamic duo with Pat White as QB who led the Mountaineers to recently unseen heights under RIch Rodriguez.
Strengths:
Slaton has excellent straight-line speed and agility. He is also a versatile back who is solid as a receiver out of the backfield, although his pass-blocking needs some work since he didn't do it much in the spread offense. Slaton has very good instincts and finds small holes and explodes through them to daylight, showing the balance to stay on his feet and get to the second level. He is a true home-run hitter who has routinely taken plays the distance for long touchdowns. Could definitely be a great kick returner with some seasoning in practice.
Overall: Many people think he made a mistake in coming out too early for the draft his junior year but Steve Slaton can still be a good weapon for a lucky team. He could be a kick returner or a third-down back for sure and could eventually become a starter if he adds more weight, although it will be tough. He is a good pick in the mid-to-late third round or maybe even higher depending on team needs.
