Steve Slaton News

Diary of a dynamic duo

Patrick White and Steve Slaton will be checking in regularly with SIOC from Morgantown throughout the summer.

Steve Slaton: I really like the summer, because you do get a chance to let your brain and your body relax a little bit. There aren't too many distractions and you can get a lot done. I can sleep in and still have time to eat some breakfast. Lately, it's been a steak and egg biscuit at McDonald's.

I have class at noon each day. Right now, I'm taking a math course for six weeks. I like to try and get ahead on some of the required classes during the summer, so I can take more stuff in my major during the season. That works better for me than a bunch of varied topics.

Patrick White: I probably wake up a little earlier than Steve, but we have a pretty similar type of schedule this summer. Right now, I'm taking a class in sports law, which is required for my athletic coaching education major. It's just all about law and cases related to sports, a lot of different examples from cases of the past.

Do I eat breakfast? Usually. Maybe a sausage biscuit or McGriddle, but I have some orange juice. For lunch, I grab a sandwich or fix one at home, or maybe boil a hot dog. I live with my brother and the only day we really cook a big meal is on Sundays.

I'm at the stadium from about 2:30 to probably 7:30 each day, between workouts, the training room, passing drills and watching film. Not so many guys watch a lot of film in the summer, but for me, there's more time and less distractions to go over things.

SS: We work out three days a week on strength and weightlifting; I go to the group that starts at 3 p.m. and we finish 4:30 or 5. Some guys go early in the morning before their classes or jobs, but I like to sleep. These sessions focus on ways to improve our core strength and plyometrics. Your muscles are like rubber bands, and the plyos improve that elastic to make you more explosive and give you more power at a faster pace.

The other two afternoons each week, we get together and work on speed and endurance. After that, Pat gets some footballs out and the skills guys try to have some fun. Our quarterback might be as demanding as our strength coaches.

PW: I do try to organize what we call "passing league," which is the skill guys getting together to work on things. Sometimes it's easier than others to get them to stay around after a workout, and sometimes their attention spans are not too long. I do stay on them to keep them focused on the task at hand.

By the time I get home in the evening, I just eat something and relax and sometimes study. Even though it's summer, there's still enough to do.
