Three Mountaineers make award lists
Two West Virginia football players have been named to the Maxwell Award watch list, while another has been placed on the Bednarik Award list.
WVU quarterback Pat White and tailback Steve Slaton are two of the 65 on the watch for the Maxwell, given to college football’s most outstanding player. Defensive lineman Keilen Dykes made the watch for the Bednarik, awarded to the nation’s best defender.
Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn won the Maxwell and Penn State’s Paul Posluszny won the Bednarik last season.
Nitro’s Kight signs with W.Va. State
Nitro senior Jake Kight signed a letter-of-intent to play baseball next spring at West Virginia State, Yellow Jackets coach Calvin Bailey announced Monday.
Kight was a Class AAA first-team all-state selection as a utility player after helping the Wildcats to the state tournament for the first time since 1983.
Kight carried a .474 batting average, with a team-best 10 home runs and a Kanawha Valley-leading 58 RBIs. He also posted an 8-3 pitching record with a 2.56 earned run average and 87 strikeouts in 63 innings.
Herd lands punter from Tennessee
Marshall has reportedly landed its fifth commitment of the 2008 recruiting season, a Tennessee Class 5A all-state punter.
Kase Whitehead, a 5-foot-10, 180-pounder from Maryville, Tenn., attended the Herd’s recent camp. He joins Stone Mountain, Ga., products Cory McCutcheon, Destin Route and Ahmed Shakoor, plus tight end/linebacker Jamie Hatten of Hendersonville, N.C.
